Did you know that alligators, bobcats, black bears, river otters, rare birds and other wildlife live in the wilderness just minutes away from downtown Wilmington? That's just one of the surprising facts cruisers will learn on our Black River Nature Cruise.
Prepare to be amazed by the tranquility and breathtaking scenery along the northwest Cape Fear River and the Black River. Experience the beauty and natural history of the Cape Fear region during a narrated nature cruise along these scenic and historic coastal rivers aboard the Capt. J.N. Maffitt.
Just minutes after leaving the dock, guests will experience a river that appears almost as it did to the early explorers. Adventure travelers will cruise 15 miles up the Cape Fear River to the wilds of the Black River, one of the cleanest waterways in the state. Nature enthusiasts and photographers alike will enjoy the slow-moving, amber-colored waters, framed by spectacular swamp forests highlighted with seasonal wildflowers and relict old-growth cypress trees.
Each nature cruise offers passengers unique encounters with seasonal plant and wildlife-watching opportunities, including neo-tropical songbirds, numerous wading birds, and other special treats while our guide, author, ecologist and award-winning educator Andy Wood, shares his wealth of knowledge about the natural history and cultural heritage of southeastern North Carolina.
